W2 Community Media Arts Centre

I met with Jon Husband this morning to begin to figure out the technical requirements for the W2 Community Media Arts Centre project. In many ways this centre exemplifies the type of project that I'm most comfortable with - a coalition of community groups working together to provide social space with a strong technology component. Politically it's an interesting space to be in, given my support for and involvement with the Woodsquat and what that site is now turning into. There are many who feel that not nearly enough is being provided by the City and the developers of the site to provide for the DTES community. I'm sure the next year will provide many challenges around what should happen with this space and who's going to pay for it. Of particular interest to me is what kind of Internet backhaul the site will have - so far it sounds like three commercial providers will be supplying services to the site, however my preference would be to have our own fibre connection to BC Net in Harbour Centre with one of the commercial providers serving merely as a failover.
